Ruffner No. 2

Posted by: Naaman

Ruffner No. 2 mine operated from 1886 - 1953, then it was sealed shut.

It was upgraded and improved periodically over the years.
The most recent renovation appears to have been a magnificent cave-in.

  1. Nice spread. We were there on Sunday with Marty Schulman, ex Ruffner naturalist and de facto mine expert. How did you find and gain access to the mine? Is it up behind the crusher?

  2. Planned on being super productive today...
Then I stumbled across your blog and four hours later, well....here we are.

Anyhow, super super cool stuff. My brothers and I used to throw the idea around of exploring some of these places back when we were still in highschool but never got around to it. Unbelievably cool shots. Kudos.

  4. John, the best way to get there is off Ruffner Road, near the car junk yard. Jerry, the mine has been sealed. A lot of damage was done in 1970-71 when the nitro blew up that was stored in a large bath house due to lightning. Every window facing the mine at Roebuck Shopping City was blown out.

  7. its in a park in birmingham al by the airport ruffner mountain park unless you know about caving or mining you shouldnt enter because of roof falls is when the roof of the mine caves in and can trap you or crush you it only takes a small piece of rock to hit you in the head to kill you the ground will talk to you if you know what to listen for but if you do not know anything about being in a mine and have never been in a mine stay out of it and bad air that will kill you and you will never know it bad air has no smell you will just start feeling weak the you die by the time you start feeling weak its too late
