You can get into all the buildings including the main clubhouse. There is still stuff left in the buildings. The golf course is super overgrown. We walked along the golf cart paths for a while but nothing to see except a couple hole sign markers.
It was Brookwood Country Club! My family was members there when I was a child - I'm 60 now! My sisters and I were trying to remember the name of it - after googling it and asking friends on facebook, a friend was familiar with it and knew the name! It was nice back in the day!
I recently did a significant amount of research on this building and posted a full history on my Instagram account, including photos of it from the 60's. @Lainaker
This is my favorite spot in all of Alabama, I've searched your website all day to see if you had found it too (incidentally a mutual friend of ours may have shown us both, recognized from a couple of your shots). Thanks for not disclosing the location, I always worry too many people will find it and they'll tear it down for good. Good work.
This is actually what is left of a house owned by my grandfather when my 80 yr old mother was a teen. He sold it to Spur and Saddle and held the mortgage. They couldn't continue the payments so he got it back. I visited there as a child when he moved back into it. While the S&S had it,they put in the big pool and a small kids pool. The big pool wasn't used anymore. But my sister, my cousins and I played in the little pool when we visited. After it was sold again, the house burned and all that is left now is what you see.
The painted tile was in the kitchen and the blue tile is an upstairs bathroom.
great photos
ReplyDeletedo yo know any history about the country club? or have you found any records about it?
ReplyDeleteI wish I did
ReplyDeleteI found this place yesterday. Looks pretty much the same.
ReplyDeleteHave you heard of the meadows country club? It's an abandoned golf course that is pretty cool.
Is it worth seeing or is it just a locked up clubhouse and some unkempt fairways?

DeleteI was told that the name of the club was the Spur and Saddle club. This info came from Mary Rodda who owned the Irondale Barber Shop.
